Neom – The Mega-City of the Future

Saudi Arabia is investing $500 billion to build a unique 170 km city, Neom, in the Tabuk region, near the borders with Jordan and Egypt.

The name Neom is derived from the Greek word "neos," meaning "new," and "mustaqbal," the Arabic word for "future." Considered a city of the future, Neom will incorporate the latest smart city technologies. There will be no cars or streets, and it will be designated a "free city," governed by new legislation that will differ from existing regional laws, set to take effect in 2022. Neom aims to be both a tourist destination and a residential area, with the first residents expected to move in starting in 2024.

Its total area will be 26,500 km², featuring a 470 km coastline and mountains reaching altitudes of 2,500 meters.

The first phase of the project, which has already begun, focuses on creating a linear city known as "The Line." This city will extend 170 km and is planned to accommodate over a million residents.

Key infrastructure works include a pedestrian-friendly surface area, two underground layers for transport, and high-speed transit solutions featuring autonomous mobility. Additionally, construction is underway for Neom International Airport, which will be over 3,700 meters long and cover approximately 2,000 hectares.

The Line is expected to create 380,000 jobs and contribute $48 billion to the kingdom's GDP, with financial estimates for the first phase totaling $200 billion.

The main goal of this project is to power the entire city with 100% renewable energy sourced from wind farms and solar energy, as well as advanced technologies that convert water into oxygen and hydrogen for fuel.

Future plans also include drone taxis, a Jurassic Park-style amusement park featuring robotic dinosaurs, and numerous Michelin-starred restaurants from around the world.
